Developing research centres in three liberian landscapes
The One Health concept, encompassing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, has emerged as a powerful framework for addressing complex global health challenges. Recognizing the critical importance of this approach, USAID has been a key proponent of One Health initiatives, including in Liberia, which faces significant challenges at the intersection of humans, animals, and the environment. The establishment of One Health Conservation Centers (OHCCs), represents a strategic investment in addressing these challenges through fostering collaboration, research, and interventions that improve health outcomes for both humans and animals while promoting environmental sustainability.
USAID is establishing OHCCs in the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR), Marshall Wetlands proposed protected area (PPA), and Sapo National Park. The OHCC in each of these landscapes will serve as a research station that can host researchers, students, and groups. Each OHCC will have dormitories, private accommodations, labs, and conference rooms, among other shared spaces. These centers will serve as hubs for research, training, and policy development and serve as important platforms for community engagement.
